Cast Cattle – Terrific news again for the cow vendors as the trade remains in blistering fettle, a sale average today of 146 pence per kilo and a more than impressive £1017 per head. First mention must go to familiar consignors Fristling Hall Farm Ltd who regularly choose Darlington with the store cattle from their 1200 cow herd based in Essex, today Fristling Hall had drawn a lovely packet of geld cows, 51 to be precise which averaged a terrific 159ppk and £1160. Credit must go to the Essex firm as today they produced the top 7 goss valued cows, their best a 7 year old Limousin at 879kg 192ppk and £1687. Whilst 2 of the top 4 (all beyond 200ppk) prices per kilo also headed back to the South East raiders it was a sharp 3 year old Aberdeen Angus heifer from ABP Wilsons, Langleydale which led the trade when she sold for 210ppk (662kg £1390). Stock bulls this week were few and far between however the pick of them certainly impressed, a brut of a 3 year old Charolais from RT & PM Kirkbride of Leaholm, Whitby spun the scales round to 1164kg and sold for a pleasing 160ppk and £1862. The dairy cows again were well placed to a buoyant parliament of bidders, the pick of them this week 162ppk from R & S Bradley, Quebec and £1080 and £1080 from A Willey of Chopwell, Newcastle.

Store Cattle – The store cattle buyers continue their charge over the top, some are waving the white flag however the majority of them appear fully armed and more than committed to their crusade; trade throughout can only be described as an absolute flyer. Up at the very top of our leader board this week was a powerful 2 year old Limousin steer from H Walton & Son, Brass Castle Farm when he sold for a wonderful £1475; highlights amongst the other steers were certainly plentiful, a wonderful run of 8 strong Aberdeen Angus from G & J H Tomlinson & Son of Sunniside Farm, Knitsley rang the bell selling between £1365 and £1450 with an outstanding average of £1393. The heifer buyers too were full of Spring cheer, the top slot headed back to Great Ayton with CH & MC Phalp, Aireyholme Farm as their outstanding 2 year old Limousin reached a whopping £1450; a rare day when both the steers and heifers average comfortably in to 4 figures. Yearling stores are now appearing from the shadow of winter, the better end of these can reach comfortably between £1100 and £1200 as was the case for both W A Wardman Ltd, W M Bainbridge and the younger portion from the aforementioned Phalp consignment. The young bulls preceded the stores and they were also rehomed with ease, the pick of them a hefty Charolais from G T Tweddle of Satley sold for £1280 whilst a smart quintet of 11-14 month old Limousin’s from J R & M Richardson of Winston impressed with an average of £1180.

Topping the store hoggs today was a wonderful £123 from J B & L Knight of Wingate with a strong Texel, behind them followed a host of hoggs £110-£120. Buyers can some season’s close the gates in March however this year the likelihood is that they will take whatever they can for as long as they can, irresistible demand.
