Show Cattle – A red letter day in Darlington, a quite simply staggering display of quality and depth from start to finish, primarily we must offer infinite congratulations to all the vendors today, despite the pandemic ridden adversity 2020 has delivered they put on a show to eclipse anywhere else on the planet. The man with the honour of placing the show cattle was Mike Maloney of the self-titled Mike Maloneys Country Butchers and Bakers of Warsop and Blidworth, Nottinghamshire; under the spotlight Mr Maloney drew upon his wealth of experience and carried out this most challenging task with impeccable efficiency and skill, faced with 46 show cattle in total, of which at least a dozen could easily have been worthy Champion’s, the eventual winner and DFAM 2020 Prime Stock Champion came from Frank Page of Lodge Farm, Elkington, Northamptonshire with an absolutely sensational British Blue steer. The picture perfect home bred 522kg bullock out of a pure Limousin cow carried every attribute the modern butcher looks for, style, length, loin and a sensational top line; the more observant DFAM regulars fully expected a strong challenge from Lodge Farm today, after joining us at our very 1st prime stock sale at the new market the 35 beast we have sold since then from this exceptional home are most certainly capable of competing with the best, today’s winner was sired by the herd’s British Blue bull Droit Hector who himself was a £13,000 purchase back in 2014. A host of buyers bid freely for the Champion, we offer thanks to the underbidders and great gratitude to the successful purchasers, it therefore was a pleasure to see a local family firm who continuingly champion and promote the best of British produce go on to buy the steer, congratulations to S K & A J Linsley of Church Street, Shildon who made the final bid of a new DFAM record 740 pence per kilo (£3862).
The Reserve Champion today came from a brand new class for 2020; the ‘open class’ winner was as an absolute picture of a Limousin heifer from Darlington first timers The Black and Blue Show Team of Stoneycroft Farm, Luston, Herefordshire; a super sweet red Limousin heifer with real star quality she was sired by the infamous Irish Limousin bull Liscon Bigshow and also sold to the Linsley’s of Shildon; she weighed 550kg and sold for 410ppk and £2255. The show winners are listed below, the onlookers and other exhibitors were in no doubt that Darlington today had one of the finest shows of cattle ever seen, in particular the heavy Limousin heifer class was a sight to behold, 10 of the best example’s you could ever wish to see, the eventual winner was one of our Cumbrian regulars Alan Barnett of Brinns Farm who today turned out 7 beauties to average 296ppk and £1818. Flying the Northumberland flag were the successful team from Morpeth, the renowned farming family the Renton’s of High Highlaws departed with a collection of rosettes and a magnificent half a dozen today levelling at 279ppk and £1789. There is no place like home and some super beast from right on our doorstep were more than involved in the mix, a top team from M Robinson & Sons, Staindrop
were joined by many familiar and regular supporters all enjoying a terrific day. The butchers and wholesalers were also of the opinion that the show was of a very high calibre as no less than thirteen cattle sold the top side of 300ppk, half a dozen over £2000 and the clean show cattle throughout averaged a magnificent 296.5ppk and £1781.75.
A beautiful show of bulls and OTM’s were presented today, the judging duties fell to a longstanding and loyal DFAM supporter Michael Jewitt of J A Jewitt Ltd, Spennymoor; picked out as the champion was a superb British Blue from R & M Patterson of Upper Auchenlay, Perthshire, weighing 790kg he went on to sell for 235ppk and £1870 with the purchaser Michael Jewitt backing his earlier judgement. Reserve Champion bull today from came from one of our most regular supporters J K & C E Farming of Blue House Farm, Bolam; this super smart sort sold for 250ppk, he headed away with A Mullholland & Son Butchers, Darlington. The East coast today was represented impeccably by R H Hall & Son of Kilton Hall Farm with a trio of superbly fed Friesian bulls sweeping the board in their class. The leading light in the over aged section today came from J Mackay of Harelaw Farm, Glasgow with a tremendous 6 year old British Blue cow, she sold for 224ppk and £1872 also to Messrs Jewitt of Spennymoor. Chasing the leader (and some of the drovers) were a pair of very well fed sorts from A S & S M Kemp, Whitwell Farm both selling for 204ppk.
A near perfect yard of beast descended on Darlington from far and wide, the professional feeders of County Durham were, as always, joined by our valued friends and neighbours from North Yorkshire, Northumberland and Cumbria; added to this were consignments from North of the border from Perthshire and Fife, heading down the map as far as Herefordshire to the South West, back across through Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire as all roads truly led to Darlington; it really isn’t as far away as you’d think!
We must sincerely thank all our sponsors as a record prize fund of over £1500 was allocated on the day, a proud day for all concerned helping to showcase the very best of British Livestock, please when you can, do your upmost to appreciate the invaluable support of: Castle Farm Vets; D Brash & Sons; Vickers & Barrass; Mole Country Stores; H&H Land & Estates; Lloyd Ltd; Eden Farm Supplies; S&A Fabrications; JM Bell & Sons; J Warren ABP; Chaplynn’s Country Store; Varley Animal Feeds; Fred Greenwood & Son; SK & AJ Linsley Family Butchers.
