Also this day the inaugural Monday evening sale of prime lambs and cast ewes. Forward were 257 Cattle and 1939 Sheep.

Cast Cattle – Trade firmer, another weathered looking offering averaged 117ppk throughout; the ruthless ‘on the hook’ firms have applied the handbrake this week however the live ring in DFAM with 16 accounts in operation was again leaving the deadweight option a dead loss. Top price per kilo was a sublime 7 year old British Blue cow from J L Marks, Gilly Flatts Farm, Bishopton when she sold for 184ppk whilst the top gross valued cow came from J E Jordon & Son, The Brocks, Longhirst with a wonderful 13 year old pure Limousin reaching £1435. A fleshy Charolais from Dromonby Bridge Farm tipped the scales to 1027kg as she sold for £1396 whilst the three old stock bulls offered averaged a splendid 134ppk and £1378. Twice Little Newsham Farms sold Holstein Friesian OTM’s beyond 150ppk and to a top of £1115 as the feeders bid freely for the younger and healthy beast.

Store Cattle – A terrific trade again as Thursdays flying prime ring continues to rub off on the Monday buyers. Top price this week was a two year old Limousin steer from M & E Walton, 1 Willow Cottages, Coxhoe which sold for £1180 on a day which witnessed no less than nine separate vendors join the £1100 plus club. A great run of cattle from D & P H Brown, Cordilleras, Aldbrough-St-John claimed the top slot in the heifers at £1170 with the five (3 heifers, 2 steers) from this good home averaging over £1100. The young bulls forward this week were mostly made up of youngsters, the trade proved firm throughout with our departed old friend J M Hall, Burdon Grange once again found at the top of a Darlington Mart list.

Store Lambs – Seeing is believing, even some who saw the store lamb trade today however struggled to believe it, absolutely remarkable. The whole sale averaged a mind blowing £75 with plenty of Mule’s and horned lambs in attendance. K Cator, Stobb House Farm, Brandon was for the second week running sitting firmly at the top of the apple tree with 5 terrific Texel’s selling for £96.50; close behind a pair of peaches from D M Wade, Willington sold for £95.50 with 6 from S Carman, 19 Angus Square well worthy of mention at £95. Leading the Mule trade was C M Burnett of Low Greenfields, St Helens at £81 as all breeds, shapes and sizes were a wonderful trade throughout the sale.

Prime Lambs – Sincere thanks to all who supported this new venture, night time was the right time as a successful evening sale was held with a host of buyers, both existing and new making use of the ‘Green Sale’, with lambs easier today across the nation the sale averaged a tremendous 195ppk with an SQQ of 197ppk, a remarkable 12 buyers attended operating on 16 accounts. Top price per kilo and top price per head were a tremendous duo of continental lambs from J C Simpson, Hill Top East, Caldwell; weighing 50kg they sold for £113.50, this good home produced 21 lambs on the night to average £108.74. Good runs from Messrs Patterson, Capheaton; Nesbitt, Winston; Lowes, Barningham and Gray, Haswell also sold well as 30 pens topped 200ppk. The commercial R grade lambs were in high demand as fresh buyers to the prime ringside were out in force, so much so that not all left Humbleton with more than their supper, many more lambs could have sold to benefit the vendors. Cast Ewes – As with the lambs plenty of buyers in operation and outlets to feed and direct to slaughter creating a great trade for all classes. Top of the tree a wonderful single Texel ewe from E Wilson, White Hills Farm, Scorton selling for £115. Trade equal and in some cases better than a Thursday with all outlets covered.
