Suckled Calves – A tremendous display from the DFAM vendors, some real depth and quality throughout the classes as the very capable Mr Craig Malone kindly travelled down over the border from Fife to impeccably carry out the judging duties. Tapped out for the tri coloured rosette was a superstar from an absolutely phenomenal run from Nigel Swinbank, Cold Comfort Farm, Neasham; a beautiful 11 month old black Limousin heifer, wonderfully correct in every way, certain to make a terrific suckler cow of the future, she went on to sell to the judge for the days top price of £1720. Keith Stones and family of Nun Cote Nook followed up last year’s success at this sale and scooped the Reserve Championship on this occasion, again a black Limousin heifer the perfectly presented 9 month old was also bought by the judge, on this occasion on behalf of Messrs Phillips, Springholm, Dumfries and Galloway. Quite the day for both the Swinbank and Stones contingency’s as between them they claimed the bulk of the rosettes, with Nigel ably assisted by his daughter Kate and Keith by Daughter-in-law Grace the future of Darlington’s suckled calf shows looks to be in very safe and very capable hands.
The commercial beef trade was simply sensational, the steer calves averaged a staggering £903 (+£86) with the heifer calves £863 (+£92), many vendors witnessed a big lift on the year, the 52 wonderful calves from Cold Comfort averaged a sublime £1009 (+£141) whilst 22 from Nun Cote Nook levelled out at £974 (+£93). Messrs Marley of Holywell Farm also turned out 22 peaches to average £957 (+£34) whilst a wonderful team of 21 from W Robson, High West House averaged £973; the renowned farming family the Harle’s of Brandon Hall turned out 10 Limousin yearlings to average £1055 whilst six from the Tindale’s, Shadforth averaged a credible £890.
Away from the suckled calves a run of stronger Hereford and Aberdeen Angus cattle from D Blake, Whitehall came late in the sale and sold extremely well.

Cast Cows – A plain show on the whole met an eager ringside of buyers as the cow trade is certainly rallying, an all in average of 125 pence with a host of dairy breeds among them. Top of the tree was somewhat of a frustrating story for Anthony Tindale of Shadforth as his 34 month old Limousin heifer sold well at 212ppk and £1397; the cracking sort would though have preferably held in calf, perhaps like the owner she was twin to a bull? Top price cow per kilo was another smart Limousin, a 5 year old from J F Harland, Old Lodge Farm reaching 182ppk whilst another 5 year old Limousin from T W Thompson, Leaholm Lawns, Whitby impressed when she sold for £1283. Once again the bull trade proved good, this week tops of £1401 from F Bainbridge, Willoughby Hall with a 6 year old Limousin and 168ppk from I & S Beeforth, Eden House Farm, Whitby with a 35 month old Galloway.
