Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of Cast Cattle, Store and Breeding Stock on Monday 12th October 2020. Forward were 364 Cattle and 1666 Sheep.

Cast Cattle – A larger show with the autumnal weather of late bringing numbers forward and certainly resulting in some cows looking dull coated and lean now. The thick meat remains very good to sell as do the healthy feeders however the weather beaten elderly are noticeably easier, an all in average was Achieved just a fraction over 117ppk. The top price of the day was a credible 194ppk achieved twice by separate vendors with Limousin OTM heifers, a 37 month old from W M Reed & Sons, Lands Farm, Westgate and a 33 month old from G H Farms Ltd, Grange Hill, Bishop Auckland. Top cow per kilo was a terrific 5 year old British Blue from J L Marks, Gilly Flatts Farm, Bishopton as 23 on the day sold beyond 140ppk. The aforementioned beast were again fighting things out at the top of the gross value leader board as Messrs Reed’s heifer reached £1379, J L Marks cow sold for £1350 and G H Farms heifer was at the front of the pursuing pack as a further dozen sold over £1100. The 5 stock bulls today averaged over £1100, the pick of them was an absolute cracker of an 8 year old Limousin from P Tindale, Paradise Farm, Shadforth when he sold for 150ppk and £1474. The milking girls were out in numbers this week and as with the beef bred’s if they carry flesh the trade remains healthy, top prices went to A R & C Booth, Village Farm with an OTM at 146ppk and a welcome new face E T Hanson & Sons of Hasthorpe Grange Farm, Lincolnshire with a 9 year old at £1041.

Store & Breeding Cattle – Once again the short keep cattle are easy to sell, trade throughout remains buoyant and despite reports of the odd blip and a slip in other centres vendors again left DFAM today satisfied. A British Blue heifer and calf from L Booton, Manor Farm, Thornton Steward opened the show selling for £1580 before a light show of young bulls peaked at £1085 for a 19month old Limousin from J R Tiplady, West Hall, Boldron. Top of the pack through the store cattle was a tremendous 18 month old pure Limousin heifer from P T Makin, Roseberry Drive, Great Ayton when she sold for £1200, no less than 17 other heifers sold in to four figures on the day as the females amazingly averaged £877, a rare feat as they levelled out just £2 behind the steers. No less than 23 steers sold beyond £1000 today, wearing the yellow jersey in the steer race was T A Alderson, West Peth Row, Cockfield with a shapely 18 month old Limousin at £1190.

Store Sheep – Less of the Beltex and double muscled sorts forward today however an average of £68.50 was certainly testament to the producers and indeed the competitiveness of our store ring once again. Top of the tree today were 27 strong Texel crossed lambs from K Cator of Stobb House Farm, Brandon which sold for £88.50, just one bid behind were again Texels as 7 from J F Hartley & Sons, Hamsterley were keenly bid for at £88. Top Suffolk’s were travelled down from Hexham and Messrs M C & M D Sparke, Salmonfield selling 15 for £83; the Mules today averaged a massive £65 with the honours heading back down the B1257 in to Bilsdale and beyond as W Brass & Sons, Chop Gate sold a pen of 35 for £69 and K Sayer of Snilesworth filled the ring with 59 selling for £66. A healthy feeding ewe trade again, certainly now the green sale status could benefit the ewe vendors over a Thursday, pick of the day were 5 North Country Cheviot ewes from David Beech of Ormerley Livestock, Derbyshire as they sold for £100 per head, the smart sorts had a reprieve as their in tact udders will likely gain them one last chance.
