Cast Cattle – One of the greatest cow trades witnessed ever in Darlington this week, absolutely magnificent to see with keen buyers for all creeds, colours, shapes and sizes. A bewildering average of 148 pence per kilo and £1047 with some utterly insane returns for the happy vendors, the top price column makes magnificent reading, highest price on the day was a straight 200 pence per kilo achieved by a wonderful 3 ½ year old pure Limousin from W Barron, Morrow Edge Farm, Burnhope; the smart sort was bought by a fresh face to the cow ring on behalf of Charles Marshall Kirkpatrick’s of Lockerbie. Top of the gross values in the cow ring was a beauty from P Weightman & Sons, Hallfield Farm, Easington as a well fleshed 7 year old British Blonde again sold to the Lockerbie firm for £1668. Only a brace of stock bulls on offer this week, the pick of them a 12 year old Limousin from W & M Knaggs & Son, East Newbiggin returning a mind blowing 160ppk and £1776. The magnificent returns are clear to see, some breed records for the centre must be under threat today as all types more than rang the bell, Aberdeen Angus cows sold to 157ppk or £1349; Sussex cows sold to 157ppk or £1338; Shorthorn cows sold to 162ppk; Friesian cows sold to 144ppk or £1081; Stabiliser cows sold to 160ppk. A magnificent run of 34 well fleshed cows from Fristling Hall Farm Ltd, Essex certainly justified the long haul North as they averaged a terrific 154ppk and £1185 with tops of 194ppk and £1624.

Store & Breeding Cattle – The final offering ever of cattle from John Watson of Home Farm, Catterick fittingly topped the breeding section as a 7 year old Limousin cow with her 3 month old bull calf sold for £1600, what followed was yet another scintillating store trade. Messrs D W Dresser of Hall Farm, Greatham have produced some excellent cattle of late and today was no exception as their trio of 16 month old Limousin steers topped the sale at £1315 and averaged £1248, a handsome run of Limousin steers from G H & R G Stobbs, High Wiserley, Wolsingham followed closely behind peaking at £1230 and averaging £1148. Top priced heifer was an absolute picture of a 15 month old British Blonde from G Corner, Rye Close Farm, Newton Aycliffe when she sold for £1120, the store cattle were a fabulous trade throughout, the DFAM prime cattle vendors on a Thursday are currently enjoying a purple patch to rival anywhere in the land and the results are only adding fuel to what was already a piping hot store trade. The young bulls again look very well sold, none more so than a lovely quartet of 11 month old homebred Limousin’s from D Dixon of Middle Heads Farm, Rowley which peaked at £1280 and averaged £1225.
