Cast Cattle – Week by week it becomes more difficult to find fresh superlatives to describe the terrific trade in Darlington for cast cattle, the vendors remain happily positioned at the end of the rainbow whilst the buyers continue to be forced in to battle like Spartan warriors. This week the sale averaged over 138 pence per kilo, the show was evenly split into thirds between dairy, continental and native breeds. Top price per kilo was a wonderful 3 year old pure Limousin from A C Simpson & Son, McNeil Farm, Witton-le-Wear when she sold for 186 pence and £1298, following closely at 176ppk was another noted Limousin breeder when A & D Proctor of Swarland Old Hall made the journey down from Northumberland a very worthwhile outing. Heading the gross valued cow race was a wonderfully well fleshed 7 year old Aberdeen Angus from D A & M A M Brown, Agglethorpe Hall when she tipped the scales to 983kg and sold for 150ppk and £1474. As bidding surpassed 160 pence on a dozen occasions and 15 beast sold over £1100 once again some impressive returns were achieved; the stock bulls proved easily sold averaging £1286 which included a couple of absolute beauties, a 31 month old British Blue from A C Bentham, Fletcher Hill Farm reached 170 pence and £1557 whilst a 6 year old Limousin full of meat travelled all the way from Keighley hopefully pleasing Messrs J A & J M Wade & Son of Royd House Farm when he sold for 164 pence and £1592. The dairy farmers again witnessed a solid trade as Messrs Wilkinson & Son, Carrsides Farm, Rushford topped the £1000 barrier with a 6 year old Holstein and an impressive 10 year old Swedish Red & White from F Hare & Sons, Trees Farm, Brignall led the pence per kilo race at 140.

Store Cattle – A comparatively light show was offered however what it lacked in numbers it made up for in trade as the feeding buyers were both willing and eager to buy all classes. Leading the pack was an extremely classy 15 month old Charolais steer from R A & S Darling Farms, Hartlepool which sold for a mighty £1340 to J A Matten & Sons, Thirsk; a trio of fantastic 21-24 month old Limousin steers from D W Dresser, Hall Farm, Greatham also made a big impression on the leader board when they each sold for £1200 or more whilst the native breeds again sold well peaking at £1150 for a 2 year old Aberdeen Angus from G A & C Jopling, Eastgate. Following Thursday’s wonderful trade for prime heifers it was unsurprising that the feeders were looking to fill yards; it was most likely the success of topping Thursday’s prime sale then which seemed to give Michael Gilhespy of Low House, Milbourne a new found sense of freedom which allowed him to press on and buy the day’s top priced heifer a 22 month old Limousin from N Basey & Son, Furness Mill, Hunwick at £1105. Only 8 young bulls on offer this week and the trade was simply astonishing, top of the shop were a run of yearling Limousin’s from D Dixon, Middle Heads Farm, Rowley when they peaked at £1190 and the four of them averaged a staggering £1138. Just a single offering this week in the breeders a 9 year old British Blue cow with her Limousin bull calf at foot from W Burnside, Dean View Farm sold well at £1550.
