Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held a ‘Grand Early Summer Sale’ of Store Cattle in conjunction with their weekly sale of Cast Cattle & OTM. Forward were 425 head.

Cast Cattle – Almost impossible to find enough superlatives to describe the cow trade today, a tremendous show resulted in a sale average of 144ppk with 17 eager buyers in action at one stage, a remarkable day indeed as the cows averaged £958 with a bewildering 53 cows sold for 150ppk and beyond with more than 30 on the day surpassing £1100. A quite phenomenal run of 34 beef cows from Fristling Hall Farms, Essex sold to the days highest gross price of £1575 (a 6 year old Limousin)as the run reached the dizzy heights of 182ppk and averaged a wonderful £1166 and 149ppk. Leading the pence per kilo race was a youngster from T & D I Allan & Son, Chatterley Farm, Wolsingham when the 34 month old Limousin sold for 192 pence. Some frantic bidding has been seen for stock bulls of late and today was no exception, the 8 forward averaged £1345 with a top price of £1756 from W A Wardman Ltd, Yearby with a 4 year old British Blue, a 34 month old Aberdeen Angus from F Crawford, Park Farm, Gainford reached 186ppk. The milk cows were a terrific trade, so good in fact that they averaged 125ppk and twice sold to 162ppk; wonderful to see two vendors with old fashioned Friesian cows reaching these levels as deserved credit goes to S H Watson & Sons, Station Farm, Winston and A R & C Booth, Village Farm, Bolton-on-Swale respectively.

Store Cattle – Hats off once again to the Essex consignment, as with the cows they quite rightly feature most heavily in the top price columns today, by anyone’s standards to produce 100 store beast to average £980 is a remarkable achievement. Buyers from the length and breadth of England were either ringside or represented as several new faces brought a welcome share of the days incredible trade for all vendors to enjoy, the steers and a fine entry of young bulls averaged £940 with the heifers £836, truly exceptional throughout. The sale leader was a 2 year old British Blonde steer from the aforementioned Fristling Hall Farms; full of shape, style and potential he headed back some 300 miles North of where his journey began to Ponteland with M F Hall, Woodhill Farm for £1350. The days leading heifer had a relatively short trip across the Pennines from E & M A Procter & Son, Villa Farm, Great Musgrave when they produced a 23 month old Charolais which sold for £1250. The top priced Young Bull in comparison came from just down the road, a great run of 12-14 month old Limousins shown by J R Fell, North Oxen Le Fields, Croft Road peaked at an impressive £1180 with the 23 averaging a credible £1050.
