Junior Farmers - Huge credit must go this year to our budding young farmers as they earned themselves a record average profit of £255 per beast, bought in the backend of 2018 it was noticeable that the youngsters bid more cautiously than usual and they had all certainly farmed them very well indeed this time around. The morning show classes were kindly judged by Ricky Alder of M F Hall, Ponteland who capably carried out the task of allocating rosettes and a huge prize offering which totalled £850. Winner of the show championship and £100 was a beautiful Limousin heifer brought out to perfection by 19 year old Ben Cowton of Low West House, Tow Law; the fabulous daughter of Beulah Esquire was bought at the October suckled calf sale from the Stones family of Nun Cote Nook Farm, Marrick. Picked as Reserve Champion (£50 prize) was another Limousin heifer, this one came from our youngest competitor 8 year old Callum Dent of South Thornberry Farm, Bowes with a tremendous sort also purchased from the Nun Cote Nook herd, this one in November 2018. The highly acclaimed prize of £100 for the largest increase in value was this year won by 17 year old Elliot Grieves of Oakdene, Stockton-On-Tees when his smart buy of a Limousin steer from R Stelling of Holme Farm, Toft Hill back in November earned him an increase of an impressive £400. The showmanship award of £150 was easy for the judge to decide, the clear winner for his presentation of both himself and his beast was rightly awarded to Ben Cowton, £100 for 2nd prize went to Callum Dent and the £50 3rd prize rounded off a superb day for Elliot Greaves.
