Cast Cattle - The lingering snow across the North East depleted cow numbers with some vendors not braving the slippery roads, those who made it to Clifton Road were richly rewarded as the lighter show averaged a phenomenal 128 pence per kilo. Top priced cow was a wonderful 4 year old British Blue from D A & M A M Brown of Agglethorpe Hall, Leyburn when she sold for an impressive 177ppk; the same cow also achieved the highest gross value when she sold for £1214.22 which was somewhat harsh on a 5 year old Limousin from K O Stones, Nun Cote Nook Farm, Marrick whose gross value came up just 13 pence short of the sale leader. Top priced dairy cow was a 7 year old Black and White from G Swinbank & Sons, Breckon Hill which realised 116ppk and £946. Some hefty stock bulls on the day peaked when a monstrous Hereford from A & A G Moralee, Low Field Farm, Willington sold for a pleasing £1459.

Store & Breeding Cattle - Credit must go once again to all our vendors who produced a fantastic show of cattle for the 57 active ringside buyers to fight over, seldom have we seen a better trade for the smaller long keep beast with some totally mind boggling prices achieved by the 6-10 month old sorts on the day. The mornings show was expertly judged by a fresh new face to Darlington Brad Thompson of Green Farm, Middleton, Pickering who tapped out a fantastic 14 month old British Blue Heifer from J & K Metcalf & Son, Park House Farm, Barningham as his Champion, the judge later backed his judgement when he placed the final bid of £1150 for the tremendous heifer. The top priced heifer on the day was 2nd prize to the champion, this heifer matched the description of our champion as she was the same breed, age and from the same vendor, she was bought by the Tindale twins of Paradise Farm, Shadforth and will surely go on to make a wonderful suckler cow. The fantastic reserve champion was a halter trained 12month old Charolais steer, the pride and joy of J Norman, Aysdale Gate Farm, Charltons which sold for £1160 to M Robinson & Sons, East Alwent Farm, Staindrop, a strong Limousin from M & E Walton, Willow Cottages, Coxhoe led the steer trade when the 20 month old sold for £1180 to W H Barker, Lawrence House, Scorton. The young bulls were again on fire as the prime ring on a Thursday remains a hot spot our vendors of feeding bulls continue to reap the benefits, top price was a 14 month old British Blue cross from T L Holmes & Son, White House Farm, Craghead which sold for £1220 to J A Matten & Sons, Avenue Grange, Thirsk.
The remarkable bull trade saw the average price rise from the corresponding sale last year some £73 to £885 (£812 - 2017)
Heifers rose £14 to £882 (£868 - 2017) whilst perhaps a larger proportion of dairy bred steers saw them fall £47 to £867 (£914 - 2017)
