Clean (124) – An emotional farewell to the cattle ring on Clifton Road, a wonderful trade was witnessed from start to finish as thanks must go not only to the vendors but also the fantastic group of butchers and wholesalers who support us week in week out, 142 years of cattle sales on Clifton Road drew to and end today in the most fitting of fashions. A ballot was drawn pre-sale to determine the final vendor and longstanding supporter John Hall of Burdon Grange was chosen, the Limousin bullock sold for 450 pence per kilo and £3028, he was bought by David Penny on behalf of John Penny & Sons of Rawdon, Leeds; the Penny Family are more than just a customer here with a long association with DFAM and for over 100 years the family have supported us through thick and thin; days like today certainly cast fond memories back for many of the great character Jack Penny, seldom few remain who remember the Penny’s which traded before Jack however for almost as long as the mart has operated in this location the Penny family has stood by the ringside. A fitting tribute was paid before the final beast was offered remembering the late Stephen Aitken, a warm round of applause left very few dry eyes around the ring as the now imminent long awaited move makes Stephen’s dream a reality.
The heifers on the day averaged a fantastic 232ppk with a top price of 280ppk coming from J V & J A Hodgson, The Grange, Summerhouse; one of the best steers seen through the Clifton Road ring from J L Marks, Gilly Flatts, Bishopton sold for 266ppk. Some remarkable returns throughout but the day belonged very much to John Hall, John Penny & Sons and the memory of Stephen Aitken.

Cast Cattle (10) – Cow vendors best suited by a red sale to avoid the six day rule can rest assured that the trade through the prime ring is currently equal to that seen in the green sale of a Monday. Lambs (2002) – The lamb trade remains absolutely defiant that it will not surrender, the buyers of heavy lambs and well fleshed types were once again on fabulous form. The sale averaged a terrific 218ppk and £95.56 which is absolutely incredible for mid-September. The top price on the day went to G W Dent of Cockfield with a pair of Beltex Lambs selling for 290ppk and £133.50 to R & J Yorkshire’s Finest Farmers & Butchers, Ripon. The final pen of lambs through the Darlington prime ring were 40kg Beltex; they came from J Gray of Kiln Pit Hill and were sold to J Penny & Sons, Rawdon; an incredible 80 lots sold beyond £100 on the day as the sheep trade left Clifton Road on a high.

Ewes (782) – Surely one of the most surreal and humbling finales ever to be witnessed in the livestock industry, the final two ewes of the day brought out the very best in the buyers, sellers and staff here at Bank Top Mart, Clifton Road. As with the cattle, a ballot was drawn to determine the final vendor, the name out of the hat was again a highly valued and loyal customer in the name of the Patterson Family, White House Farm, Capheaton; more on the Patterson’s generosity in a moment. Friend of the auction Wayne Armstrong of Coxhoe had kindly donated a Texel ewe to be sold for the MIND Charity in memory of Stephen Aitken, the ewe was sold as the penultimate sheep ever at this site and she will certainly be remembered for years to come, initially bought for £200 and re-gifted back to the most worthy of causes a host of buyers and mart staff followed suit, the remarkable result earned the most worthwhile of causes a whopping £1415. Back to the Patterson Family, with neither David nor Christopher in attendance a strong Suffolk ewe was chosen from their pen to close the curtain on the old mart, on hearing the news from the ballot David immediately offered her to Charity, her proceeds were again destined to help the work of MIND. The ewe was sold and re-gifted before the final ever gavel fell when she sold to Andrew Atkinson of Harrogate for £280.
All at DFAM past and present wish to sincerely thank all our customers, staff, friends, shareholders and supporters; as I write this the sun is setting on the old mart, the sun will rise on Monday morning at Humbleton Park and a new era will begin. For the first time since the 11th century Darlington will not hold a sale of livestock within the town, for the first time since 1878 there will not be a sale venue on Clifton Road. We are both proud and safe in the knowledge that we have the best customers in the land, we will now offer them the best facility in the land. Long live the tenacity and transparency of the live auction system.
