Store Cattle – They say never cast a clout until May is out, apparent however it was that those at ringside today trying to buy smaller beast for their summer paddocks had little choice but to take their coats off as the heat was certainly on, some incredible returns from start to finish and a 99% clearance rate on the day. A show predominantly made up of 8-12 month old cattle saw the steers level at £795, heifers £789 and young bulls £786 with an amazing 51 active accounts represented by our vigilant socially distanced parliament of buyers. Top prices on the day naturally came from the stronger beast as a 26 month old Limousin steer from M L Tallentire, South Softley Farm, Butterknowle sold for £1120 and a shapely 15 month old Limousin heifer consigned by S & J Dent, Great Burdon Farm, Darlington reached £1110. As expected a glorious run of yearling Limousin calves from A & R Thompson, Dimmingdale Farm, Moorsholm attracted keen bidding and attention, the packet of 17 heifers and 8 steers returned a fantastic average of £989, an increase of £90 on the Dimmingdale herds average of 12 months previously. A two tier show of young bulls were chased by both new and returning buyers on the hunt for quality, leading the way was a strong 20 month old Limousin from G M Elstob, Mill Hill Farm, Deighton when he sold for £1195, the outstanding run of 7 bulls from Mill Hill aged 13-20 months proved somewhat lively in the ring as did their whopping average of £1107. A scattering of cows and calves sold well to the first wave of buyers we welcomed to ringside, many of those forward were perhaps in the twilight of their breeding careers however trade was certainly buoyant, the peak was a British Blue with a bull calf at foot from C & J Donnelly, Bank Flow Farm at £1400.
