Cast Cattle - More cows forward met with tremendous demand as an extra buyer or two added to the already packed ringside, the sale averaged a terrific 128.85 pence per kilo. Topping the sale was a brut of a South Devon cow which had travelled an unbelievable 240 miles from Great Leighs, Essex; the 1013kg monster from Stevens and Son, Blue Barns Farm sold for 140 pence per kilo. Leading the pence per kilo race was a much more local affair as a well fleshed British Blue from J C Brown of Centurion Farm, Durham sold for 182 pence (£1283). On 13 occasions bidding surpassed 150ppk and a staggering 23 beast sold beyond £1100. A fine show of stock bulls this week averaged £1230; the highlights were a 31 month old Limousin from W R Thompson, Sloshes Farm, Etherley at 180 pence per kilo and scale testing 1271kg Stabiliser from Skelton Farming, Stanghow at £1525. The falling milk price is no secret at the moment but hopefully we assist with a small amount of solace for the vendors as those surplus to requirements are easily sold, top of the pops this week were N & A D Brass & Son, Ox Close Farm, Shadforth as they sold 3 wonderful cows over £1000 and at best reached an impressive 150 pence per kilo and £1207.

Store Cattle - As always this was a sale well supported with plenty of keen buyers in attendance, many more beast could have sold to the vendors advantage. Credit to all the producers concerned as a good show of grazing stores were presented on the day, the steers levelled at £876 up £34 with the heifers £781 up £24; a very varied show of young bulls averaged £756 down significantly on the year however those with quality and strength were a very good trade throughout.
Top price of the day made the very long journey worthwhile for new vendor R A Douglas of Dunbourne Farm, Tenterden, Kent. A sensational run of stores from this home peaked at £1140 when a 12 month old Limousin crossed British Blue steer sold to M Armitage of Salton, Kirkbymoorside. The Kent cattle rounded off a great day when they also led the heifer prices, on this occasion a pair of outstanding 10 and 12 month old black Limousin’s also headed into the Kirbymoorside area as they traveled home for a well earned rest with J & R Waind, River House, Brawby. As mentioned the young bulls were easily sold provided they had size or quality with them, oozing both attributes was a well grown 13 month old from Wilson’s of Throstlenest Farm, Hollinside when he topped the section selling for £1135 to J A Matten & Sons, Thirsk.
