Cast Cattle – Sell live and thrive, as the deadweight firms drop their prices they are exposing all their vices, do not listen to the hypocrisy from the fat cats, believe me, the cast cows were an absolute flyer for all shapes, ages and sizes; a staggering average of 134 pence per kilo and over £900 with some top prices to rival the purple patch we witnessed last summer. Top of the tree was a 51 month old Limousin from W I Suddes & Son, South Farm, Cornsay when she sold for 190 pence per kilo, she was one of just 10 cattle to sell over 160 pence on the day, some terrific sorts from vendors as far North as Berwick-Upon-Tweed all enjoyed a marvellous trade throughout. Leading gross valued cow came from Ouston Farms, Trench Hall Farm, Gateshead with a tank of a 4 year old Charolais reaching £1518, a worthy achievement by anyone’s standards as the magnificent seven cows from this home averaged a mind blowing £1356. Just a couple of stock bulls this week but how about £1791 as a top price, a gigantic 10 year old 1244kg Stabiliser from Skelton Farming Ltd, Low House, Stanghow sold for a terrific 144 pence per kilo, no weight cap or prejudice in the live ring. The dairy farmers too had a good day today as the black and whites peaked at 148 pence from Stainton Hill Farms, Streatlam.

Store Cattle – The sunshine brings the grass cattle buyers out and with 21 active at ringside operating on 35 different accounts we enjoyed a fabulous trade again, the old sayings are often true and ‘the smaller they are the dearer they are’ is 100% correct at the moment. Top price of the day was a smart 16 month old Limousin heifer from regular supporter F Ward, Rogerley Hall, Frosterley when she sold for £1090, the same home also sold a 12 month old heifer for £1055. Leading the steer trade was another regular W B Rutter & Sons, Greengill Farm, Scargill with a 24 month old Limousin which realised £1050. Yearling steers sold nicely either side of £1000 as the bullocks throughout averaged £861. Top priced native breeds this week were strong 2 year old Beef Shorthorn heifers from J Brown, Larberry Pastures at £1050 and £980 was paid for a packet of four 12 month old Aberdeen Angus steers from R E Dickson, Upsall Grange Farm, Nunthorpe. A scattering of young bulls sold well peaking at £895 from C & M Burnett, Low Greenfields Cottage with a tidy 11 month old Limousin.
