Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their Christmas Cracker Show and Sale of Suckled Calves and Store Cattle in conjunction with the weekly sale of Cast Cattle, Store and Breeding Stock on Monday 2nd December 2019. Forward were 408 Cattle and 1346 Sheep.

Show Cattle – (picture of champion attached) Some tremendous quality forward were expertly placed in order by regular Darlington buyer Michael Robinson of East Alwent Farm, Staindrop; absolutely no doubting the champion or the clear show potential oozing out of the wonderful dark red 8 month old Limousin steer sired by Brontemoor Lord which was presented to perfection by C R Raine & Son, Stanhope Gate; he caught the eye of most onlookers as one of the best steers ever seen in Darlington, he later went on to sell to a telephone bid for the days leading price of £1420. Reserve Champion on the day went to a smart Limousin heifer from N Swinbank of Cold Comfort Farm, Neasham which was bought by the judge for £940. A great day for the Limousin breed was completed as a clean sweep in the bull show was achieved by P T Makin of Great Ayton as his tremendous run of 8/9 month olds by Coach House Munster most certainly impressed.

Store/Breeding Cattle – All in all a tremendous trade throughout, the cattle which will make a butchers shop beast in the end were fiercely bid for with a tremendous turn out of buyers in attendance. Top price as mentioned above was the extra special steer from Stanhope Gate, away from the show cattle an impressive 2 year old Limousin heifer from J Dixon, Stainton Moor Farm sold for £1130- and a pair of 20 month old Limousin steers from L Kidd, Strathmore Arms Farm sold for £1100. A run of strong 18 month old Limousin bulls from D Dixon, Middle Heads Farm led the trade at £1235 whilst a couple of pedigree Limousins from the above mentioned P T Makin sold well through the breeding section at the start of the sale.

Cast Cattle – A good quality show were again a sharp trade with an impressive average of some 125ppk throughout. Top price was a young British Blue bull from Owlands Farm, Hurst when he sold for a wonderful 205 pence per kilo and £1490. Heading up the cow trade was a strong 12 year old British Blonde from A R Keith, New Whorton Grange House, Newcastle when she sold for a very credible £1287; OTM’s peaked at 185 for a smart young Limousin from J Dixon, Stainton Manor Farm.

Store Lambs – Another breath-taking trade with all classes in very high demand, the store ring continues in finbe form with buyers showing real confidence in the lamb market. Top price were 8 Texels from K Cator, Stobb House Farm selling for £84; plenty of lambs well over £70 including the better end of the Mules, an average throughout of £64 included many smaller lambs and sweepings up.
