Cast Cattle - A wonderful show of cows this week and once again the trade was strong returning an average of 130ppk, the cow beef certainly looks very well sold in comparison to the wavering prime cattle prices witnessed lately nationwide. Twice cows this week sold for 181 pence per kilo, on both occasions they were 4 year old British Blue's as nothing could split two regular vendors M Robinson & Sons, East Alwent Farm, Staindrop and P & E Ellis, Lisern Farm, Welbury; Messrs Robinson's cow also had the leading gross value of £1366. A young Limousin bull from R E Williamson, Littleburn Farm, Hamsterley sold well reaching 189ppk whilst an older Limousin bull from T L Holmes & Son, White House Farm, Craghead amassed a mighty gross value of £1464. Plenty of life in the trade for dairy cows still as they peaked at £995 for a remarkable 12 year old Friesian from W Walker & Sons, High Copelaw, Darlington and 127 pence per kilo from the same home with a 10 year old.

Show Cattle - The show was kindly judged by Mrs Imogen Hirst of Neasham Grange, Darlington who had no hesitation in tapping out a tremendous 10 month old Limousin steer from C R Raine & Son of Stanhope Gate, Middleton-in-Teesdale as her champion, a real carcase machine the jet black steer out of a blue cow went on to sell for £1020 to M Robinson & Sons, East Alwent Farm, Staindrop. The reserve champion was almost a repeat as an 8 month old heifer from the same home the same way bred sold to the same buyer for £980. Winner of the young bull class was J R & M Richardson of Etherley House, Winston with a shapely 8 month old Limousin.

Store Cattle - Aside from the show cattle credit must go to the vendors who produced another outstanding show of stores, the grazing types were still in demand as were the short keep beast; a fabulous run of strong dairy bred stores from G Wall of Westerhope Burn Farm, Eastgate were ideal short keep cattle and may well have been sneaking a sniff of the late night feed bag, they topped both the steers and heifers at £1145 and £1120 respectively. A truly brilliant show of young bulls would rival anywhere in the country for quality and the vendors were certainly rewarded with a superb trade, amazingly 19 of the top 25 prices were achieved by P Coupland of Stone Cross Farm, Marwood peaking at £1180 for a tremendous 11 month old Charolais. With numbers of store cattle and indeed the price down slightly on the year we could certainly look at the faltering prime trade lately to blame, the heifers averaged £779 (-£63) the steers £847 (-£56) yet the impressive show of bulls levelled at an unprecedented £922 up a whopping £84 on the year with twice as many forward and 100% clearance.
